Salt Therapy
What is Salt Therapy and what are the benefits?
Halotherapy, also known as dry Salt Therapy, is a holistic approach that mimics the microclimate of a salt cave. Dry salt air is dispersed into an enclosed or sealed room through a unique process generated by a machine called a Halogenerator. This Halogenerator heats and grinds pure Pharmaceutical grade salt to the size of 1-5 micrometers to produce a dry salt aerosol. When you heat salt, it becomes super dry, and kinetically more active.
While relaxing in the room for 45 minutes the fine salt aerosol can travel to the deepest part of the lungs in addition to other parts of the respiratory tract. As salt enters the lungs and respiratory tract it dissolves bacteria and pollutants and works to expel excess mucous. Salt also reduces any inflammation and opens airway passages making easier to breathe.
This type of treatment is a safe and effective way of using salt’s natural antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and super absorbent properties to provide relief for many respiratory conditions.
The benefits don’t stop with respiratory. Salt therapy is great for the skin! Just like when you are at the beach your skin clears up, the micronized salt particles are small enough to get into your pores and dissolve any acne causing bacteria. It can naturally absorb any excess oil. Salt also helps normalize your skin’s PH level. Consistency is key. Regular salt therapy can keep your skin looking youthful, healthy and radiant!
How many sessions/times a week is necessary?
Halotherapy offers the best results when practiced regularly. The benefits are accumulative where consistency and frequency is the key. People with chronic issues will benefit greatly if visiting salt rooms at least 2-3 times a week. Those who are looking to incorporate Salt Therapy into their regular wellness routine would benefit from a weekly session. Halotherapy is safe to use on a daily basis if desired.
What should be worn when receiving (Halotherapy) Salt Therapy?
Light, comfortable clothing is best. Shoes are removed and booties are given to wear over bare feet or socks. The salt in the air will not harm and can easily be brushed off if noticeable on your clothes or body. No showers are needed or provided after a Halotherapy session. You will not be allowed to go bare foot or lay on the Himalayan salt floor. Although the salt is naturally anti-bacteria, we strive for the best sanitary practices.
What about the concern that salt is bad for you?
Consuming too much salt is linked to high blood pressure. With salt therapy, you are inhaling a dry salt aerosol which only enters your respiratory system not your digestion tract. The salt particles are so fine that even if you were to eat the amount inhaled it would not pose a risk to your health. The daily recommendation for dietary salt is an ideal limit of no more than 1,500mg per day. The amount inhaled during a salt session is about 4-9mg, not even close!
Are there any side effects?
Typically, there are none. Few individuals have experienced a slight throat tickle which can be treated with gargling warm to hot water. In cases with an individual that is highly sensitive they can experience slight skin irritation or red patches; however, they go away after a few sessions. If you experience increased coughing due to mucous buildup that means the salt therapy treatment is working. This is the body’s way of loosening and draining the mucous buildup.
Do you need to stop taking medications if receiving Salt Therapy?
No. Always continue your medications as you need and as directed by your Doctor. Since Salt Therapy is all-natural it does not have any interactive effects with medications but always refer to your Doctor if you have any concerns.
Are there tons of germs in the salt room?
Salt naturally absorbs bacteria and it’s naturally anti-viral. The walls and the floor of our room have salt on them which creates an almost sterile environment. Most importantly we have the best ventilation system installed and specific to the Salt Rooms needs. After each session used air is circulated out and clean, fresh air brought in. There is no recycling of air back into the salt room. All chairs are properly sanitized after each session and we do have a specially designed spray cleaner we use on the salt. We strive for over the top cleanliness and the highest sanitary practices.
What kind of salt is used?
Our salt is 99.99% pure sodium chloride (Pharmaceutical grade salt). It contains no fillers or caking agents. It’s the same salt that hospitals use and is the same type of salt all the research has been conducted on. We do not use nor recommend using any other type of salt.
What will my experience be like in the salt rooms?
You will enter a beautiful room where you will see Himalayan salt on the walls and on the floor. You will have comfortable zero- recliners to relax in, with heated neck wraps and light blankets are supplied. The Himalayan salt brick wall is lit up and relaxing music will be playing. It’s our guest choice. You can choose to listen to the relaxing music, read a book, meditate, or simply rest. If you choose, you may add Salty Sounds to you session. This is an informative guided meditation via headphones that talks about salt therapy with beach scene relaxing guided imagery. Highly recommended!
We ask that you are aware and respectful of the other guests in the salt room and use quiet whispers. The temperature and humidity in the rooms are controlled and needed to provide the cleanest and best Halotherapy experience. You will find pure relaxation and tranquility away from your everyday stress leaving you rejuvenated and fully energized!
Do you get the same effect from going to the beach?
While going to the beach and breathing in the ocean’s salt air is great for the body & mind, salt therapy takes the benefits to a whole new level. Dry salt is able to move through both the upper and lower respiratory tracts where wet salt can only reach the upper airways. Dry salt is negatively charged, therefore, able to revive cilia and speed up its motion. The cilia line our respiratory tract and are covered by a layer of mucous. When a foreign particle such as dust is inhaled, the job of the cilia is to beat, causing the mucous to travel towards your mouth so it can be coughed out. Salt therapy speeds up that process and in some cases where that process is non-existent it works to get it started.
Can athletes performance benefit from visiting a salt cave?
Absolutely! Salt Therapy helps increase lung function and breathing capacity. Athletes find that once they have optimized their breathing, they can achieve better performance, using less breath. This means they have more air in reserve to achieve outstanding performance.
Clinical Trials have shown that Salt Therapy is effective in:
- clearing any excess mucous from the airways
- providing anti-inflammatory and bactericidal effects in the whole respiratory tract
- reducing bronchial sensitization and improving lung function
- helping to clear unwanted, inhaled particles from the respiratory tract
Integrating Halotherapy into a training routine may induce better lung function and improve performance. Why not get the edge? All athletes, regardless of the sport or level they play may benefit from visiting a salt cave prior to a competition.
The primary goal of every athlete is to achieve their absolute, maximum potential. Salt Therapy has been found to aid in Sport Performance Enhancement. One of the most important determinants of whether this is possible is an optimum breathing pattern and lung capacity. As an athlete, you know that every advantage counts. Salt Therapy can help you get that edge.
Will I be able to see the salt in the air during a session?
No . . . you would never want to be able to see the salt in the air. For the session to be therapeutic the salt must be micronized to a size of between 1-5mg, not visible to the human eye.
Is Salt Therapy FDA approved?
Unfortunately, at this time it is not FDA approved. The approval process is very involved and takes many years. Salt Works chose their Halogenerator manufacturer and consulting company because it is actively working to get standards in place and get the approval process happening!
What is Himalayan “Pink” Salt?
Himalayan “pink” salt comes from crystallized sea salt beds that were uplifted by mountain building into the Khewra Salt Range of northern Pakistan. The underground salt formations are protected from modern-day pollution and formed from ancient oceans, leading to the belief that Himalayan Pink Salt is the purest salt to be found from the Earth. Himalayan salts are packed crystals with over eighty minerals and elements which formed naturally within the earth. The rocks are made up of sodium chloride and other trace minerals including: iron, potassium, sulfate, magnesium, calcium, bicarbonate, bromide, borate, and strontium. Because of these minerals, Himalayan pink salt is believed to have the following benefits:
- Regulating the water content throughout your body
- Promoting healthy pH balance in your cells
- Promoting blood sugar health
- Assisting in the generation of hydroelectric energy in cells in your body
- Absorption of food particles through your intestinal tract
- Prevention of muscle cramps
- Promoting bone strength
- Assisting in replenishing electrolytes
- Assisting in alkalizing the body and preventing excess acid
Himalayan salt is great for us via our digestion system but is not recommended for the Respiratory system. We only use Pharmaceutical grade Pure sodium chloride.
Jade Bed
What is the Jade Bed?
A Truly Unique Massage Experience!
As part of our forward-thinking and integrative approach to wellness, we offer massage therapy on a MIGUN Thermal Massage Bed. The MIGUN Bed is an approved US FDA 510K Class II Medical Device that may be used without a prescription. The MIGUN Thermal Massage System uniquely integrates thousands of years of Eastern medical wisdom with the technological advancements of Western medicine to provide you with an economical, relaxing and rejuvenating massage like no other!
What Are The Principles Behind the MIGUN Thermal Massage Bed?
Acupressure, Acupuncture, Chiropractic, Massage, and Far infrared therapy are all rolled into one to provide you with a deep, warm, relaxing massage, giving your spine a soothing stretch and stimulating the key acupuncture points, blood vessels, and muscles to accelerate and improve blood circulation. The MIGUN Thermal Bed uses jade massage heads to conduct infrared heat and create therapeutic pressure from the head to toe.
What are the benefits of combining Far Infrared Heat (FIR), Massage, and Acupressure with Jade?
- Improves Flexibility and Circulation
Far Infrared Heat penetrates more deeply and effectively than conventional methods to improve circulation and relax tension in muscles and joints. The bed’s rollers are made of jade because it is the most effective natural conductor of infrared heat. The jade heads massage muscles and tendons around the spine, relieving tension, relaxing hardened nerve roots, and improving circulation and flexibility. - Relieves Pain and Stiffness
People generally seek a healing massage to relieve stiffness, tension, and pain. FIR decreases stiffness and swelling in joints and connective tissue and has been shown to reduce pain by direct action on both free nerve endings and peripheral nerves. In addition, FIR heat may actually produce endorphins, the body’s natural pain killers. Strained muscles block the proper intake of oxygen and nutrients, which leads to inflammation from toxic build-up in the muscle tissue. Deep tissue massage helps break up and eliminate scar tissue and releases chronic patterns of physical tension. As toxins release, blood and oxygen circulate more fully throughout the body, helping soothe pain from conditions such as arthritis and fibromyalgia. Massage also calms the central nervous system and brings the brain into an Alpha state to reduce mental stress and improve memory function. - Relaxes and Stabilizes
When the tissues of the human body are heated, lengthened through the application of acupressure massage, and held in a certain position for at least 10 seconds repeatedly, the tissues learn to stabilize in the lengthened position. If you repeat the application for at least 20 sessions, the new lengthening can “set.” Studies show that those suffering from back injuries, lower back pain, and spinal nerve impingement can benefit from the combination of Far Infrared Heat (FIR), massage and acupressure to the back.
Who should not use the Jade Bed?
While Migun therapy is safe for most people, we ask that you consult with your Physician if you have any of the following:
- Phlebitis/blood clots

What are healthy negative ions?
Negative ions in the air can boost your alertness and mood, according to WebMD. Negative ions occur naturally in high altitudes and near large sources of water, like waterfalls or the open ocean. These odorless molecules help your body produce serotonin, a “feel good” chemical in your brain. Negative ions are tasteless and odorless molecules found in the air. They are known to increase oxygen flow to the brain and, as a result, facilitate alertness, decrease drowsiness and stimulate mental energy. Negative ions are also known to protect against germs and decrease throat irritation as well as sneezing and coughing. Unhealthy positive ions are released into the atmosphere by air conditioners, televisions, computers and other electronic devices. These ions are responsible for a variety of symptoms including headaches, fatigue, nausea, and dizziness. These symptoms originate from the fact that electronic devices deplete the air of negative ions.
Zen Bed
What is a Zen bed session?
A Zen bed session utilizes crushed Jade, Amethyst and Tourmaline gem stones to create far infrared heat, healthy abundant negative ions and the option to use PEMF, Pulsed Electro-magnetic Field Therapy. All these combines to create a relaxing, warm, stress reducing cellular tune-up for your whole body.
How far does the far infrared heat penetrate the body’s tissue?
Approximately 4-6 inches. Deeper than any traditional heating pad or sports cream can reach.
What does the far infrared heat do to the body?
It can stimulate the circulatory system which boosts blood flow. That helps get oxygenated blood where it is needed. This in turn can help decrease pain, stiffness and inflammation. This slight increase in your heart rate can burn calories. Bonus!
What are negative ions?
Negative ions are abundant in nature, especially around areas with moving water like a stream, the beach or near a waterfall. The heated gem stones in the Zen Bed provide a lot of these healthy negative ions.
We were meant to spend more time outdoors. In an office setting there may be only 200-400 negative ions per cubic square compared to 20,000 negative ions per cubic square in some areas in nature. A lack of exposure to negative ions can have you operating at a suboptimal level.
Technology dramatically disturbs negative ion exposure. Dryers, computers, TV’s etc. actually produce bad unhealthy positive ions. The result is our bodies are constantly undergoing free radical damage being exposed to the unhealthy ions.
What is PEMF Pulsed Electro-magnetic Field Therapy? Aren’t EMF’s bad for you?
Not all Electro-Magnetic Fields are bad for you. In the case of PEMF, it is being used to recharge your cells. Each cell in the human body has its own small electro-magnetic field operating between 0-30Hz. The Earth also has an electromagnetic field, usually around 7.83 Hz and is referred to as the Schumann Frequency. This is the type of magnetic field our bodies have evolved to operate in but due to increasing technology we are further and further away from that frequency. The Zen bed utilizes that same Earth frequency.
If you are interested in looking at studies using PEMF technology, there are over 450 studies on pubmed. See http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed.
Is PEMF FDA approved?
It is FDA approved to manage joint pain, bone repair and signs of depression in a medical setting. PEMF is used by NASA to maintain the health of astronauts.
Full Spectrum Sauna
What is the difference between infrared saunas vs. traditional saunas?
- Traditional hot rock and steam saunas operate at extremely high temperatures more than 200 degrees Fahrenheit. This kind of heat is uncomfortable for many people, and it is not necessarily effective as it simply heats the air around you.
- Infrared light, experienced as heat, is the invisible part of the sun’s spectrum and is necessary for all living things. Far infrared can penetrate human tissue providing a deep, detoxifying sweat. Far infrared saunas are the most common on the market.
- Full spectrum saunas (the type we have at Salt Works Spa) emit three infrared wavelengths independently – near, mid and far. At optimal frequencies, the different wavelengths can precisely target specific benefits. Near infrared light shouldn’t be confused with ordinary red light. Therapeutic near infrared light is invisible to the naked eye and has a consistent output without extreme heat or light.
Are children allowed to use the sauna?
The core body temperature of children rises much faster than adults. This occurs due to a higher metabolic rate per body mass, limited circulatory adaption to increased cardiac demands and the inability to regulate body temperature by sweating. It is for this reason it is our policy to allow only adults 18yrs and older to use the sauna.
What should I wear in the Sauna? Can I go nude?
We do not allow anyone to go nude in the sauna. Men typically wear workout shorts or swim trunks; women typically wear undergarments with spa provided wraps, workout shorts, tank tops or bathing suits. We do supply a lightweight cotton wrap that you may wear.
How long is a typical session?
Sessions here at Salt Works are 30-45 minutes depending on your goals. For overall wellness we recommend 2-3 times per month, but the sauna is safe to use every day.
Does infrared technology interfere with implants (metal, silicone, etc.)?
Metal rods, pins, artificial joints or any other surgical implants generally reflect infrared waves and are not heated by this system. Nevertheless, you should consult your physician prior if there are any concerns.
